It all began more than 20 years ago when my parents decided to move to American Samoa in 1989. Before that we were living on Andrew’s Air Force base in the State of Maryland. My father, Tolua Iese, was an Air Force Master Sergent and a crew member for the Presidential Air Force One and Two jets. There were three of us at the time, including my younger sister Tekawitha Melanie Iese and baby brother Andrew Tolua Raymond Iese. Together we got to meet the likes of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush Senior a couple of times because of my dad’s job and career. I was fascinated by these Presidents. I had always wondered what it was like to be seen and known all over the world. This fascination would soon become the catalyst towards my film-making endeavors. My mother Tekawitha Vito Iese was a stay at home mom, she always told us stories of Samoa and how it would be an adventure for us to move there. I never thought in my wildest dreams that this island (American Samoa) would be so much more! My dad retired in 89′ and brought us to American Samoa because he wanted [...]

The American Samoa Multiple School Units Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) concluded their Command Formal Inspection (CFI) on February 29, with four schools, Tafuna, Samoana, Faga’itua and Manu’a High School achieving, Honor Unit with Distinction (HUD), the highest recognition a school can achieve and with it, the authority to wear the HUD Gold Star on their uniform. Leone and Kanana Fou High School’s gained recognition of Honor Units or a grade of ‘A’ and as a result earned the Honor Unit Blue Star Award. For all JROTC Programs, wearing the Gold or Blue Star is a highly sought privilege and is considered a significant unit accomplishment. All of American Samoa should be proud of these future leaders, for standing up and standing proud for what they believe in. Our future lies in those type of leaders that have courage, honor, dignity, intelligence and a sense of duty. spiritwriter67@gmail.com

New high school wrestling champions were crowned last weekend in American Samoa, Saturday 2/25 when the Leone Lions, led by Coach Zena Iese, led his Lions to victory on Saturday 2/25 by defeating six other schools including a dethroning of last year’s champions, the Tafuna Warriors. Coming into the wrestling championships, the Lions were not expected to take the title, as the Warriors and Faga’itua Vikings came in as being the favorites to take the top two spots. The best the Lions were supposed to finish at was 4th or may be as low as 5th, this according to some ‘Armchair Wrestlers’. But the Lion Grapplers came into the championships with a ‘not knowing any better’ attitude and a ‘losing is not an option’ frame of mind, as they fought their way to victory over the other schools, completing another successful year of high school wrestling here in American Samoa. In the girls division, the Samoana Sharks were able to walk away with the championship title, while Tafuna was 2nd and Leone 3rd. Congratulations American Samoa. Wrestling is still on the rise and getting stronger and stronger on the rock. spiritwriter1967@gmail.com

It has been reported recently that here in the territory, Myna birds, an invasive species, have been falling from the sky to their deaths. Around 20 have been found in the Nu’uuli area, with some of them being sent off island to Hawaii to the US Geological Survey, by the local Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources (DMWR) to find out the cause of death. Hopefully it is not ‘Avian Influenza (Bird Flu). These birds were first brought here sometime ago from their land of origin, the Indian sub continent, to mainly control insect pests. But now they have become the problem. First with their rapid growth, in which they are pushing our own local birds back into the forest, so we cannot view their beauty anymore and now they might be causing another problem. Hopefully the death of these recent bird is not Bird Flu or something worse, because if it is, it will spread like wildfire here on this tiny island to other birds, animals and soon, people. Let’s hope its not something that will spread. In the meantime American Samoa, stay away from this bird. spiritwriter1967@gmail.com

Welcome to MISSION VOTE RECON, an online forum covering candidates running for governor in American Samoa and the political formats they represent. We will be gathering and showcasing information on each candidate based on the principles and goals listed within their campaigns. TEAM LOLO & LEMANU: With elections being as they are in this day and age, having access to candidate information at the tip of your fingers through the online web should be one of the great focuses for the teams running in this year’s election right? The most accessible I have come across so far I have chosen to feature first. I got their information from a Facebook friend of mine who shared with me the team’s Facebook page. The team I am referring to is Team Lolo and Lemanu which consists of Lolo Moliga running for Governor and his partner Lemanu Mauga running for Lt. Governor respectively. Their motto in this election is “Fa’amumua Tagata” which translates to “People First.” A look into their website as of 2/22/12 shows me they’ve just begun to put it together but are a bit lacking on the design. It has a style of simplicity though which is a plus for [...]

Posted from http://www.mmaabsolute.com check them out! By Bryanna Fissori Combat Reporter/Legal Analyst House Bill 2013 stands to change the face of nearly all combat sports events in the State of Hawaii. On Tuesday, January 24 a frustrated group of professionals from the industry and state employees met at the capitol to discuss the bill which would serve to place events such as kickboxing, muay thai and pankration under the regulatory umbrella of the Hawaii MMA Program. MMA Regulatory Body MMA in Hawaii is not regulated by a “commission” as is customary in most states. Typically the sport falls under the rules of either a state athletic or boxing commission. The Hawaii MMA Program has been in existence for just over three years and was created in response to a growing sport in need of validation through a state governed body. The program currently regulates only events or bouts classified as “Mixed Martial Arts,” meaning that on cards that consist of pankration and kickboxing fights, only MMA fights are regulated. “The state wants to close the loophole that currently exists,” Chief Inspector for the Hawaii MMA Program Lionel Wright (The Black Hawaiian), told MMA Absolute. “The MMA program only covers Mixed [...]

I was walking to work last weekend (Sunday) and as I was passing by this church, one of its members that was standing outside of the front door waived to me and asked me to come over to him. Being respectful to this older gentleman, I walked over to him to find out what he wanted. He asked me where I was going and I said to work. He then replied, “Don’t you know that it is a sin to work on the sabbath”. I then took a deep sigh, debating to myself if I should have a discussion with him on the sabbath. I said to myself, oh what the heck. I then asked him, “If I don’t do what ‘man’ says, does that mean I am wrong. Have you ever asked God, If Sunday was the true Sabbath”? “I don’t question God, I just do what he says,” he snapped back. “In other words, you just go with the flow,” I said back to him. With that said, I just walked away from him. When we ask God questions, we are not questioning whether he is right or wrong. You ask God questions to find out the truth. [...]

if there was a line leading to the gates of hell im pretty sure samoans would be cutting in line to get ahead. i have no clue as to why its so hard for people in samoa to stand in line without trying to skip. it happens practically everywhere; at the banks, in the stores, at sporting events, social events, you get the picture. i was at the tax office today to file. thank goodness there wasnt a real wait, 30 minutes tops. yet some people still felt the need to get ahead. there were two types today, the first was the one the “wanders” into the place pretending not to know that a line has already formed; and why would there be a line right? its only tax season, why would there be others here at the tax office? the second type was the “i just need a place to rest, dont mind me”. they find a “crack” in a line that has seats and if those already in line arent quick to fill the void, theyll use that opportunity to move in and sometimes even acknowledging to those around that they understand its part of the line, but [...]
